Changeover Awards

At changeover we show our recognition and appreciation with awards. This year we extend our congratulations to our three Paul Harris Fellowships:

Sue Proud (pictured) has put energy, humour, charm and skill into the End Trachoma project, the Mardi Gra and the demanding Protection Directorship.

Chris Manahan, Chris was president last year in the uncertain times that followed Covid; He and Jude have hosted International Youth exchange students; he is there for projects needing a handyman.

Hue Owen Jones for many years as a board member and dedicated Rotarian.

Our congratulations to Alan Shephard (pictured) receiving the Community Service Award. His major contribution was 41 Shelter Boxes costing $1,000 each for local and disasters. That is a lot of Saturday mornings outside the markets. June Mills also received this Award for decades organising Australia Day and Vocational Education.

Changeover
Our 2023 Changeover saw outgoing President Shirl hand over the chain of office and charter to Derek Anderson.  It was a night of laughter, fun and even song.  What better way to celebrate RI President Jennifer Jones' theme Imagine than a rendition by Golden Carmichael a local singer and over 60 Rotarians and guests. Well done Shirl on a very interesting, busy and at times extremely sad year for the club.  Sure Derek has lots of ideas and support from his board.

Moruya Preschool Thank You

It was lovely to receive a handmade card from the staff and children from Moruya Preschool recently.  Our club revitalised the veggie gardens at the school and by all account the resident chooks are loving it!  Such a pleasure to help this wonderful preschool and the community as a whole.

Vocational Award Recipient - Susanne Page
Our recent Vocational Awards night saw Susanne Page from the St John Ambulance - Moruya Division honoured for her tireless volunteering with St John for over ten years.  Sue was also presented with a $500 donation to the Moruya Division.  Susanne was a huge hit on the night, so much so that she was asked to come back the following week and tell our members more about St John Ambulance.

Vale John Hayes
Our club is saddened by the sudden passing of our club member John Hayes.  The husband of current President Shirl, John was a wonderful committed Rotarian and a huge supporter of Shirl both at the club level and internationally.  John will be missed by all.

Cooking up a storm at RYDA
As in previous years, our club was only too happy to provide lunch over the two days of RYDA held at the Moruya Jockey Club.  Three hundred students, teachers, police, and instructors were catered for in a hectic half-hour period.  Well done to all involved in this fantastic road safety program.  No doubt we will be there again next year.

Huge support for Riverlights & Mardi Gras by our members

Last weekend's Moruya Mardi Gras & Riverlights Festival was extremely well represented by our wonderful members who took on a variety of tasks.  Special mention to Sue, Rohan and Christine who were our tireless workers on the Moruya Celebrates committee. Although the turnout for our world-famous sausage sizzle was lacking, the Moruya Rotary banner was flying high.

Bringing Christmas cheers to Moruya

Vulcan Street Moruya is all aglow with the Christmas lights going up thanks to the joint effort of Moruya Rotary and the Moruya Business Chamber.  The process of erecting the lights takes over two hours plus the hours spent beforehand testing and or replacing the lights and tinsel - a huge task.  Well done to all concerned.
Moruya Rotarians - Jeff Proud, Tony Armstrong & Rohan Gleeson.  Business Chamber & helpers - Rob Pollock, Ryan Pollock, Steve Sheather & Geoff Wilson

New garden beds for Moruya Pre-School

A few of our club's aspiring gardeners recently replaced the old wooden garden beds with new beds at the Moruya Preschool.  The original vegetable beds were constructed by our club during Rohan Gleeson's year as President in 2010, so they have held up extremely well.  No doubt the children, and chooks will love their new steel veggie beds.  Another wonderful example of our club helping the community.

Welcome to our new members

It was great to welcome our two newest members last Tuesday night - Rhonnie South and Steve Picton.  Rhonnie first joined our club back in 2002, but unfortunately had to resign three years later due to family and work commitments.  Officiating for the induction was our very own Past District Governor and club member, Phil Armstrong.

High Tea for Meals on Wheels Volunteers

Members and partners banded together to provide a scrumptious high tea for the Meals on Wheels volunteers recently at the Moruya Jockey Club.  By all accounts, the volunteers were very impressed by the vast array of cakes, slices, and savoury delights.

Moruya Jockey Club Kiosk gets a facelift

Stand aside Michelangelo, we have some great painters in our club. While not on the same scale as the Sistine Chapel, some of our members did a great job preparing and painting the kiosk at the Moruya Jockey Club recently.
(Not in the photo, those who did the prep work and cameraman Ward.)

Moruya Showground kitchen gets a makeover

The refurbished kitchen at the Moruya Showground is now finished and it's looking good. The refurbishment has been partially funded ($40,000) through the Rotary Club of Moruya by RIBI (Rotary International Britain & Ireland) Disaster Recovery Trust and Rotary District 9705 Bushfire Recovery Funds. The old kitchen did her best during the bushfires, and now she has had a well-deserved makeover. Photo: Show Society members with our very own Phil Armstrong and Col Jay.

Harbour Bridge celebrations

What a fantastic weekend of activities to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Sydney Harbour bridge. Big shout out to the Harbour Bridge organizing committee particularly Gary Traynor, Rob Pollock, Glenda Collins, and our club members Sue, Rohan, and Christine. Our club participated in the street parade, the festival of lights with our stunning yacht sailing down the Moruya River, and operating one of the many food stalls on Saturday night.  A huge commitment by our members but the buzz around town was incredible.

Rotary Men's Health Van

Huge shout out to the 34 men who came to the Rotary Men's Health van last Wednesday to have their blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar checked, it was a record number of men since the van's inception. Of course, the health checks would not have been possible without Registered Nurse Bill Power and his wife Debbie, the support of Moruya Mowers & Pumps, Col Jay our Community Service Director, and his happy band of helpers.

National Youth Science Forum

Special guests at our club last week were Ava Weymans from Moruya High School and Makkade Ethel from Carroll College. Both girls participated in the 2022 National Youth Science Forum. Due to Covid the two-week course was held online, but that did not deter the girls from immersing themselves in STEM subjects.
A huge shout out to our Club Youth Director - Phil Smith along with Club Secretary - Keith Armstrong for making their attendance possible. Yet another example of Moruya Rotary supporting youth in our area.
